What Is Laz's Lounge?
Welcome to Laz’s Lounge! In a nutshell this website serves as my blog that shares the latest and greatest news in the world of digital marketing and social media. While the main focus of a majority of pieces housed here are related to digital marketing and social media, it’s also composed of a variety of other topics that I think are fun to share with my readership! Including social media and digital marketing, I also have:
- A weekly podcast where I chat about best practices, trends in the industry, things that I encounter in my regular job at General Motors and other random stuff going on in my personal life;
- Reflections on a weekly photography challenge that I’m participating in;
- Case studies of the best (and worst) public relations campaigns and deep dives into brand reputation management;
- Tips and tricks on various graphic design software in the Adobe Creative Suite arsenal;
- And my experiences travelling abroad every month across the United States for work.
Where It All Started
The first time I really had any experience with blogging was with my journalism class back in 2015. As part of the class we had to write stories every week and upload them onto a WordPress.com blog that we created. After the class ended I never touched the blog again. It wasn’t until about 2 years later where I had my social media class with the public relations program at Eastern Michigan University where we had to create a another blog and write posts regarding some of the best practices in social media. Not only did I find a lot of intrigue with the social media world and tried to learn everything that I could, but I coupled my writing skills that I gained as the news editor for the Eastern Echo with my ability to compile topics of interest regarding social media and what we were learning in the classroom.
For that class we had to write a blog post once every week and I took it further beyond the class once it ended. It became a hobby of sorts but I also used it to enhance my portfolio of written work and clips that I could take with me after I graduated from Eastern. For a year I used a WordPress.com blog and it wasn’t until I participated in a digital marketing clinic in the summer that I learned that you could actually self host your own website. The clinic required that we blog once a week and we also had to track our analytics using Google Analytics or certain trackers that weren’t available via a WordPress.com site. You could buy plans to utilize those but it would cost anywhere from 15 to 30 dollars a month just to be able to track your analytics which I felt was just kind of a waste of money. I figured out that you could buy your own domain name and have your own self hosted site for as little as 80 dollars a year; once I had that knowledge, the site that you’re visiting was born after countless hours of revisions and coding efforts!
